The First Ever AI Fashion Week

The fashion industry, a leader in innovation, is always stretching its limits. It's hardly surprising, then, that the latest release of generative AI tools has brought about the first-ever AI Fashion Week. In late April, AI Fashion Week took place at Spring Studios in New York. The event was a unique showcase and competition for designers from around the globe to display their collections through images born from a blend of imagination and technology. The single stipulation was that the designers had to use solely AI-generated models, or “digital avatars,” to showcase their collections, complete with imagined runway settings including front-row guests.

These “models” are constructed using artificial intelligence algorithms designed to mimic human features and proportions, resulting in lifelike avatars wearing apparel that resembles real-life fabrics. The images accompanying this article are all AI-generated designs and models that I created through Midjourney, a platform that uses text prompts to guide image generation in mere seconds. After instructing the system to “imagine” my scene and design, a combination of my creative direction and the AI's capabilities produced the resulting images. The experience was nothing short of astounding.

This concept revolutionizes the fashion design experience, altering our understanding of the term “fashion-forward” indefinitely. As we think about the future of the industry, it's apparent that this technology not only provides designers with a new realm of creativity and flexibility, but also has the potential to reduce waste and environmental damage by eliminating the need for physical samples and runway shows. Potentially changing the way the fashion industry works by showcasing virtual pieces, before production.

Though AI Fashion Week is in its infancy, it offers a peek, nothing short of thrilling, into the future of fashion. As the fashion industry continues to evolve and adapt to new technologies, AI Fashion Week promises to be a game-changer, unveiling new possibilities for designers, retailers and consumers.

I predict that for many aspiring fashion designers, mastering systems like Midjourney (currently available in beta via Discord) will be an invaluable skill set that could kick start their portfolios. Even seasoned designers are employing this system to elevate their imagined designs — it's about utilizing AI as a brainstorming tool.

How do the designs make their way into our closets, though? There have been instances when the AI-generated design doesn’t quite work as a wearable piece. For example, one AI design featured what seemed like a regular belt, but upon a closer look the belt wasn’t actually functional — the AI system didn’t quite understand how a belt works. The winners of AI Fashion Week were awarded by having their collections realized and produced into real-life clothing. Looking forward, imagine that this will be what makes exceptional AI designs stand out, designs that can actually be realized.

The fast-paced integration of AI into our everyday lives signifies that generative AI has catapulted us years into the future. There remains, however, a question over society's reception of AI-generated fashion supermodels. Earlier this year, Levi’s faced backlash for announcing its intention to use AI-generated fashion supermodels to increase brand diversity. This “prompts” the question: Who will Levi's use as inspiration for their models, and why not choose living, breathing humans instead? As we move forward, the debate around regulation and ethics will undoubtedly continue. Will living models still be necessary? Who owns the AI-generated designs? Where are the AI systems pulling their inspiration from? At the rapid pace this is all happening, there’s no doubt these questions will be answered soon.
